Q:

What is service-learning?

A:

According to the Learn and Serve America’s National Service-Learning Clearinghouse, service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

Q:

What are the components of service–learning?

A:

Preparation - Students applying for a Jump Starters grant, get their preparation by  completeing emPower Plant or Public Achievement program. Both programs incorporate a curriculum that allows students to identify a need, investigate it, and make an action plan to perform service.

Action - Students carefully and confidently carry out their plan of service while applying what they have learned to benefit the community.

Reflection - The ongoing process occurs before, during, and after students implement their plan. Reflection gives students the time to explore the impact of what they are learning and its effect on their thoughts and future actions.

Celebration - Students get an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and are recognized in a public way showing students that the school and community members appreciate their contribution.

Q:

Are there different kinds of service?

A:

Direct Service - Service that directly affects and involves recipients. The interactions are person-to-person, and face-to-face, such as tutoring young children or mentoring.
Indirect Service - Service activities that do not provide service to individuals but benefit the community or environment as a whole. Examples include constructing park benches, stocking a food pantry, collecting clothing for families living in a shelter.
Advocacy - The intent of advocacy is to create awareness or promote action on an issue of public interest. Examples of activities include: writing letters, sponsoring town hall meetings, performing a play, and public speaking.
Research - Research activities involve students in finding, gathering, and reporting on information of public interest.
