The Bartlett Park Project

Over thirty students of St. Joseph's Truman Middle School enhanced Bartlett Park by removing all waste and debris from the ice storm and sanitizing the restrooms. In addition, they planted flowers and replaced older woodchips with fresh woodchips for a brighter appearance. The students got involved and went deeper into learning about teamwork, use of technology, meeting goals, and public speaking. They gained valuable knowledge as they studied soil types, the earth’s crust, and different types of shrubbery. Additionally, the students incorporated several life skills such as: cooperation, planning, organization, budgeting, and setting a timeline. The project plan helped children and adults to enjoy a park with less trash, have a safer environment for children, and contribute to the well-being of the community.
The students coordinated the plan with the St. Joseph Parks and Recreation Department to meet the community needs to revitalize Bartlett Park. The students also visited a local business to gain knowledge about caring for larger amounts of plants and shrubs.
This project was funded through a Jump Starters grant provided by Heartland Foundation. The funds for this grant were obtained from Learn and Serve America.
