Community Clean-Up Days

Wathena, Kansas needed a new way to market the positive aspects of the city in order to attract families, new businesses, and build community pride. A clean community attracts growth and economic development, and Wathena needed to be become a clean community in order to promote the city.
Seventh and eighth graders from Wathena Junior High school found a new way to accomplish this with Jump Starters grant provided by Heartland Foundation. This grant was sponsored by Learn and Serve America. The students sponsored six community clean-up days, rented dumpsters, and worked with residents of the community to collect litter. There were six total clean-up days:

February 21, March 14, March 28, April 25, May 16, June 6

Each clean-up day, two dumpsters were rented: one for household waste and another for yard waste. JumpStarters funds were also used to buy gloves, trash bags, shirts, food, and other supplies. Two chainsaws were purchased to clear debris for the project and then later donated to the Wathena Fire Department. After the scheduled clean-up days, the students held a barbecue for the volunteers and townspeople.
