Grant City Beautification

This is the story of a youth empowerment group that call themselves the Stars. They were the 7th grade class of Worth County R-III School, and they decided it was time for a change in their city. The Stars made a collaborative decision to do something for the town of Grant City to help beautify the square during the summer and all year long. The students came up with the idea to place banners around the city square. This was an idea that had once been brought up in the city, but it wasn’t until these students made a stand to better their society that it was accomplished.
Research was done on the internet to find out what towns in the area already had banners and the cost of banners and brackets in order to estimate the cost of the project and set up a budget. The Stars developed some fundraising techniques such as garage sales and Puppy Chow sales to reach their goal for the banners. They raised $4,530.00 and were awarded a Jump Starters grant of $2,694.70 through Heartland Foundation funded by Learn and Serve America to help aid them in their efforts to beautify the city.
The design committee looked through old newspapers and photographs for inspiration and the students designed the banners.
The 7th grade class at Worth County R-III was given an award by the Mayor for all the hard work they put into beautifying Grant City. Also, the students achieved the 2nd place State Youth Community Betterment award.
